Dal Fry

It is Sunday today. As usual, got up late and since then wondering what to make for the lunch. Something which is easy, quick and of course liked by everyone :) !! So jotted down on "Dal Tadka". As I am born and brought up in Jain family, onions had never been a necessity when it comes to cooking. I never hated or disliked it but it is just that the absence of onions goes unnoticed by my taste buds. Now, after getting married to a Punjabi boy, I noticed here onion to food is like oxygen to human beings. I like eating Urad Dal with plain "Jeere" ka tadka but since my hubby is so much fond of onions, I decided to transform it into "Dal Tadka" :D .

List Of Ingredients:


Urad Dal- 2 cups
Chopped Medium Sized Onion-1
Chopped Medium Sized Tomato- 1
Chopped Green Chillies-1
Ginger Paste- 1 tsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Salt-1tsp (or to taste)
Turmeric Powder-1 tsp
Cumin Seeds- 1 tsp
Red Chilli Powder-1/2 tsp
Coriander Powder- 1 & 1/2 tsp
Mango Powder- 1/2 tsp
Garam Masala- 1/2 tsp
Ghee- 2 tbsp

Steps To Prepare:


Step1: 
Soak Urad Dal in normal water for 1 hour. The grains would swell up a bit. Throw away the water and add fresh water to it. 


Add water and urad dal to pressure cooker such that the water level is atleast 2-3 cms above the level of dal. Add salt and turmeric powder to it. Keep this dal for boiling. After 3 whistles, slow down the flame for another 10 minutes. Switch off the flame now and let the pressure get released.






Step2: 
By the time pressure is releasing from the cooker, lets prepare the tadka for the dal. Heat ghee in a pan. Add ginger paste and chopped green chillies. Stir and after few seconds add chopped onions. 


Once the onions turn pink, add asafoetida, cumin seeds, red chilli powder, coriander powder and mango powder. Add  chopped tomatoes and 1/2 cup of water. Let these spices cook for another 5 minutes.



Step3:
Open the pressure cooker as all the steam would be released by now. Add boiled urad dal and its water gradually to these spices cooked in step 2. Sprinkle garam masala over it. Mix well and cook it in the open pan for 3-4 minutes. 


After this, cover it with a lid and cook it on low flame for another 5 minutes.



Dal Fry is ready!!! :)

Serving Suggestion:
Serve it with hot steaming Chapatis.
