Sabudana/Sago Khichdi

Wishing all the blog readers a very Happy Navratre!! Today I am going to share the recipe of "Sabudana Khichdi" which is one of the popular dish consumed during fasts. "Sabudana" is also known by other names like Sago or Tapioca Sago or Pearl Tapioca. "Sabudana khichdi" is made by cooking overnight soaked sago in oil seasoned with cumin seeds, green chillies along with boiled potatoes and peanuts. Apart from fasts, you can have this recipe as breakfast also as it is a rich source of carbohydrates. In fasts, when your intake of wheat, grains and veggies is already limited I would advice you to increase the intake of fresh fruits, juices and water in diet.
If you are making this khichdi otherwise and not for fasts, you can add more veggies or spices of your choice like tomato, ginger, onion, peas etc to increase its nutritional value. As sago mainly comprises of carbs, addition of some nuts and veggies would balance out the overall nutritive value.

List of Ingredients:

  • Sabudana (Sago)-1 cup
  • Cooking oil - 4tbsp
  • Cumin seeds-1 tsp
  • Chopped Green Chillies-2
  • Chopped Boiled Potato-1
  • Peanuts-1/4 cup
  • Sendha Namak (or normal salt)- to taste
  • Red Chilli Powder-1/2 tsp
  • Lemon Juice- 1 tsp

Steps to Prepare:

Step1:
Soaking sabudana is the first and crucial step in this recipe. If sabudana is not properly soaked or over soaked either you will get unevenly cooked sago or sticky mushy khichdi.
For soaking, take sago in a container and add water in it little above the level of sago. Let it stand for 30 minutes. Then, drain out the excess water. Sprinkle some more water over it and cover with a lid. If you are using small sago pearls, let it stand for 2 hours like this and if big pearls soak then overnight.
I have used big sago pearls for this recipe. Sharing few images for giving you the idea:

Step2:
Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds to it. Once the seeds start to crackle add chopped green chillies. Stir for few seconds.

Step3:
Add peanuts to it. After one minutes, add chopped boiled potatoes. Let the peanuts and potatoes turn golden brown on Medium-low flame.

Step4:
Add soaked sago, salt and red chilli powder. Mix gently. Add 2-3 tablespoon water and cover with a lid. Let it cook for 3-4 minutes. Switch off the flame and add lemon juice.

Garnish with some freshly chopped coriander. Enjoy!! :)
